had in mind. It seems that Dr. Roux has for many years suffered from
tuberculosis and he of course believes in fresh air and sunlight.
I told them that we had had experience with the calorimeter since
1895, that we had tried all forms of tests, and were unable to find any mat¬
erial difference between the results obtained with the respiration ca .ori¬
enter and those secu-ed with the respiration apparatus, in ether -words,
that the metabolism in the open room did not appear to differ from that in
the dark chamber. In dismissing the metabolism of different individuals
■with Mademoiselle Pompilian, I told her that when the height, weight, and
sex, were known and the subject was without food in the stomach, we could
ordinarily predict the metabolism to within 15 per cent. This statement
seemed to startle and discourage her and she asked what was the use of a
calorimeter. It may be that her idea of accuracy in results was not much
Closer than 15 per cent. She remarked that she had frequently found great
differences in individuals, which is quite oentrary to our experience.
Just how she found these differences I do not know. Certainly the respi¬
ration calorimeter formerly located in the Boucicault Hospital would not
justify measurements of this kind. Personally I do not think that she
knows what an accurate experiment is.
After several hours* discussion, I was unable to find that any
of her ideas were worth following up in order to modify or better our pres¬
ent respiration calorimeter. Mademoiselle Pompilian thoroughly believed
that her plan would be successful and had confidence that all of the
apparatus that she had worked out at the Boucicault Hospital could be count¬
ed upon as being of proved value. She had not the slightest idea, however,
as to the expense of the numerous modifications which she wished to in¬
corporate in the apparatus or the time required for working out the numerous
plans.
