stimulating electrode B. Since the distance from B to the distal end
öf the chamber is 6 mm., the nervous impulse would start from
just outside the narcotising chamber or from just inside of it where
the nerve, owing to the influence from normal part, is less deeply
narcotised.
B. An attempt to show that the impulse
DOES NOT START FROM WITHIN THE NARCOTISED REGION OF NERVE
BY “ INSIDE STIMULUS ” AFTER THE CONDUCTION
FAILED FROM “ OUTSIDE ELECTRODE.”
I. Dr. Hayashi took a narcotising chamber of 18 mm. in
diameter and passed through it a nerve-muscle preparation in such
a manner that the distance from electrode B to the distal wall (W)
of the chamber is equal to that from electrede C to the distal
chamber wall, so that BW=CW (Fig. 34). At first, without
narcosis, the curves of the maximal muscle twitches were registered
on the rotating myograph, applying at B and at C the stimuli
which were only just maximal. From these curves the latent
period (1) of the muscle twitch in case of stimulating at B and that
(!') at C were determinnd in the same way as described in the
section A. Then the narcosis was commenced and the nerve was
exposed to the action of narcotics (urethane or ether) until the con¬
duction failed from outside electrode A. At or just after this stage
of narcosis the coil distance for threshold stimulus at B was deter¬
mined which was in the most cases about 230 mm. The secondary
