stellen, in Betracht. Dort ist die Kraft der Krystallisation der leitende 
Zug, und Verletzungen der Symmetrie stellen die wesentliche Un- 
ordnung dar, mag die Entstellung des Krystalls seiner Hervor- 
bringung nachfolgen, oder mag sie als Resultat von dem, was 
dieser Hervorbrixrgung vorher-ging, ein ursprünglicher, und wenn 
wir so sagen dürfen, ein mitgeborener Fehler sein. In beiden Fällen 
ist sie eine Abweichung von dem normalen Typus und so den 
Missgestalten sowohl der Thiere als Piianzen analog. m) Hunter's 
Geist erlangte bei seinen Streifzügen durch dieses unendliche Gebiet 
des Gedankens so herrschende Ueberblieke über die Theorie der 
weniger versprechend. Dennoch zeigt schon das Unternehmen die Grossartigkeit und 
Weite seines Geistes; und wenn auch wenig erreicht wurde, die Methode war die richtige.

the course of a rariety of experirnents on animals and vegetables, 1 have frequently" 
obscrved that the result of experiments in the one has explained the oeconomy of the

973) "Natura being pretty eoustant in the kind and number of the different parts 
pecnliar to each species of animal, as also in the situation, formation, and eonstruction 
of sueh parts, we call every thing that deviates from that uniformity a 'monster,' 
whether (it occur in) crystallization, Vegetation, or animalization. There must be some 
principle for those deviations from the regular course of natura, in the economy of 
such species as they occur in. ln the present inquiry it is the animal creation I 
mean to consider. Yet, as there may be in some degree an analogy between all the 
three (kingdoms of natura), I shall consider the other two, so far as this analogy seems 
to take plaee."     "Monsters are _not peeuliar to animals: they are less so in them, 
perhaps, than in any species of matter. The vegetable (kingdom) abounds with monsters; 
and perhaps the uncommon formation of many crystals may be brought within the same 
species of production, aml accounted for upon the same principle, viz. some inüuence 
interfering with the established law  of regular formation. Monsters in erystals may 
arise from the same cause, as mentioned in the "Introdnctionf viz. either a wrong 
arrangement of the parts of which the crystal is to be composed, or a defect in the 
formation, from the first setting nut being wrong, und (the formation) going on in the 
Same (wrong) line. The principle of crystallization is in the solution; yet it requires 
more to set it a going, or into aetion, such, e. g., as a solid surface. The deficiency 
in the productiou of a true crystal may be in the solution itself; or, I can conceive, 
that a very slight cireumstance might alter the form of a crystßl, an even eive the

1561, I, 239-241. Der Leser muss sich erinnern, dass die Phaenomene der Krystalli- 
sation damals noch nicht der mathematischen Behandlung unterworfen werden waren, die 
später so viel über ihre Gesetze enthüllte. Der Goniometcr war damals noch ein so rohes 
Instrument, dass es unmöglich war, die Winkel der Krystalle mit Genauigkeit zu messen.
