Diener Gottes zugefügt hast, " rief der Prediger aus, "sollst Du
wie eine abgestochene Sau in diese Kirche gebracht werden. "
Und so geschah es wirklich. Ueber ein Kleines wurde Hilton in
einen Streit verwickelt, von seinem Gegner durchbohrt und als
blutende Leiche in die nämliche Kirche getragen, wo er den Frevel
begangen hatte. 45)
Selbst im Gefangniss behielt ein Priester diese Gewalt. Seine
Macht war ihm von oben herab verliehen und kein weltliches Un-
glück konnte sie schwächen. Im Jahre 1673 hörte der Prediger
Alexander Peden aus seinem Gefängniss, dass ein junges Mädchen
über ihn lachte, als er sich mit einem sehr lauten Gebet beschäf-
tigte, einer Art Andacht, für die er berühmt war. Die Heiterkeit
kam dem armen Kinde theuer zu stehen. Peden rief die Strafe
Gottes gegen sie an. Und seine Anklage ward erhört, denn der
Wind wehte sie von einem Felsen herab, über den sie hinging,
und warf sie in die See, wo sie alsbald ertrankßö)
Manchmal suchte die Rache der Priester sogar die unschul-
digen Nachkommen dessen heim, der sich ihren Zorn zugezogen.
Ein Prediger, dessen Name uns nicht überliefert worden, fand in

er habe später erfahren, "that the story is very true about the denuutiation upon the
Laird of Hiltoun, as I have (I think) published it; and ther is a man yet alive who
was witnes to it, and in the church at the time."

worship of God, a young lass, ebout the age of thirteen or fourteen years, came to
the chamber-door, mocking with loud laughter: He seid, Poor thing, thou mocks
and laughs a1: the worship of God; but ere long, God shall write such a sudden,
surprising judgment on thee, that shall stay thy laughing, and thou shalt not eseape
it. Very shortly thereafter, she was walking upon the rock, and there came a blast
