Im November richteten die Schotten der Krone zum Trotz ein
System der Vertretung auf ihre eigene Hand ein, woran jeder
Stand seinen Antheil hatteü") Früh im Jahre 1638 war der Volks-
bund (national Covenant) geschlossen, und der Eifer, mit dem er
beschworen wurde, zeigte die Entschlossenheit des Volks, auf alle
Gefahr hin seine Rechte geltend zu machen. 42) Jetzt War augen-
scheinlich Alles vorüber. Während des Sommers 1638 wurden
Vorbereitungen gemacht, und im Herbst brach der Sturm los. Im
November versammelte sich die erste Generalversammlung, die man
