The result of this conference was, that Mr.
West immediately received instructions to make
designs from the list of subjects; and afterwards
with the King himself; he assisted to form an
architectural plan of the chapel, which it was
proposed should be ninety feet in length by fifty
in breadth. When some progress had been
made in the paintings, Mr. Wyat, who had suc-
ceeded Sir William Chambers as the royal
architect, receivedorders to carry this plan into
execution; and the grand flight of steps in the
great staircase, executed by that architect, was
designed to lead immediately to a door which
should open into the royal closet, in the new
chapel of REVEALED RELIGION.
